July 3, 2015, Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago, 27, a crew member from Brazil who was working aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Sun was reported overboard.
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) was notified Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago jumped overbord without a life jacket around 0416 hours on Thursday morning while the Norwegian Sun was south of Douglas Island, near Juneau, Alaska.
Around 10 pm on Thursday the USCG suspended the search for Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago.
Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago was reported missing to the Norwegian Sun cruise ship security around 2 pm. Alaska State Troopers were notified around 5pm that Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago was missing from Norwegian Sun.
A check of Norwegian Sun’s security footage showed Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago jumping overboard without a life jacket at 0416 hours
Friday around 4:30 p.m. local time on Friday, July 4, 2015, a sport fisherman found the remains of body on the eastern shore of Horse Island. Authorities say the description matches that of Jonas Fillipe de Miranda Santiago. Alaska State Troopers have said “The remains and clothing match the description of de Miranda Santiago, and the location where they were found is approximately 10 miles northwest from the position he was last seen.” If the death is confirmed, this case will be moved to Cruise Ship Deaths.
